Yes, you can

Can I? Have you asked yourself that question? Have you ever wondered whether you are capable of doing what someone else can or have done? It is probably one question you asked yourself one time or the other, but I wonder what your answer was and perhaps the reason behind it.

There are many things that people tend to avoid just because they feel it is just an impossible area for them. They have a feeling that it is not what they could achieve. Most often than not, they could, but they probably made a decision that they could not. Many things may look challenging to some because they do not know how to do them. It could fail because they chose not to subject themselves to the process or sacrifice involved.

Let us consider a simple principle of addition taught in schools. At the start of a class, the teacher demonstrates that he can add two numbers together. He communicates the concept with suitable examples—showing how to do it and its application in various scenarios. The students learn the principle and then attempt to apply the same to numbers. The students that follow the guide and examples would also achieve similar results. They all could do it, but they needed to understand the process and principles—to empower them to do the same—achieving the desired result.

The same is true in life. There are people capable of doing remarkable things; but cannot, as yet, not because they do not have the ability, but the process or principle is missing—it makes it difficult or seemingly impossible for them. They fail because they do not know or understand the instructions, or probably they have not applied it the right way.

When a student understands the principle of addition, as stated in the example mentioned earlier, it empowers the student to do more sums and gain more confidence to do more and solve related challenges. He may not be free from errors but could be easily corrected. He could correct himself when things go wrong because he knows the procedure. He is also likely to accept corrections when his error is spotted because he can recognise a deviation from the earlier principle.

If you are struggling to achieve your desired result, it may simply be because you do not know the principle that makes it work, or you have applied it the wrong way. You can take some time to assess your situation to find out where you have deviated from the principle.

What have you tried to do, but it seems you cannot? What are you doing that never seems to give you the desired result? Doing it many times may not help if you have avoided a part of the process. You can achieve it if you take the time to learn the process and apply the relevant principles. If you want to get the sums right, you need to understand the concept and apply it accordingly. If you do, you will get it right.

You are likely to get the job if you understand the requirements and adequately prepare yourself. You will know more about a subject if you devote more time to find and study relevant materials. Those that know more do so by learning more about it—it is a deliberate choice and action.

The pilot can fly an aircraft because he has devoted some years of his life to the relevant training and acquisition of information. If you desire the same, you must invest your time and resources to follow the same process. They can do it because they devoted time to empower themselves. You too can if you do the same.

A specialist doctor can spend 11 or more years studying the functions of a particular part of the human body. He becomes a specialist that could identify symptoms in any human body and offer solutions. If you want to do the same, yes, you can. How? I know you got the answer, yes, go through the same process. The reason no one seeks you like the specialist is not that you are disliked or disrespected. No, it is because you have devoted your time to something else, which probably is not yielding the results you expected. If you desire the same thing, you can, but you need to devote your time to follow the process.

A football team is honoured by their nation for winning a prestigious medal in an international competition like the world cup. Do you desire that honour? If your answer is yes, you can get the same, but you need to learn the process and be willing to go through the same.

A student once performed poorly in school, but he realised that his classmates that got good grades devoted so much time and resources to understanding the subjects. They invested their free time to practise and read more. He decided to follow the same process—doing the extra, and he soon became the best in the class. He had the ability all along, but he achieved it when he was willing to give it all it takes.

An American industrialist, business magnate, and founder of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford, once said these words; ‘Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t—you’re right.’

If you think you can, you will be willing to go through the process and give it all it takes. If you do not, you will not, but in both cases, you are right because it all depends on you. You are where you are because of what you have chosen to do or not do.

There is a bridge that can connect you to where you desire to be. It is discovering the process by learning and following it accordingly. If you are willing to do what it takes, you would have built a route to your desired destination. If you want to, yes, you can do it. If you do not want to give it what it takes, you cannot do it. Yes, you are correct in both cases.
