One of the choices everyone faces is between what we can do and what we should do. You can do so many things, but should you do everything you can?
What you can do is anything you have the ability or are capable of doing. It could also be what you can get training to do. You may not know how to swim, but you can undergo training and learn to swim. You can also learn to operate machinery, take care of animals, attends to patients, produce goods, speak a new language and so on.
It means that there are so many options and possibilities open to everyone. In other words, you can do many things—you can decide to subject yourself to the requirements to achieve such things. It is possible to be anything you want to be, but what you should do may probably be a different thing entirely.
Some people train in a particular field but later discover that they do not have any passion for the industry. They may find out that there is something within that long for fulfilment and cries for attention. They may then go and retrain in another area that they feel they could make a difference. It was possible to achieve success in the former because they could, but they found that something is missing which their choice could not provide.
A young man chose to study Engineering some years ago because he was very brilliant. He felt the choice would help him get a good grade, good job, and gain respect among his friends. He thought it was the best choice, but he later found that he was wrong. The fact that you can pass a course does not necessarily mean it is the way to go. You can do well in it does not mean you should do it—you may do well but not get the fulfilment.
Some people follow similar advice in life. They do things because they can do well in them—not thinking of what should be the right choice out of the many things they can do. He got an impressive grade because he could do it by studying hard but finding fulfilment in it as a career was a different question. He achieved the former, but the latter did not materialise, which brought frustration even though he did well in school and could follow the instructions at the workplace.
Many things may be good and possible, but not all may be right for you. In other words, there are things you can do, but there are things you should do. It is very crucial to understand what you should do and not just what you can do.
If you take time to know yourself, you may find that you have unique gifts and abilities that point towards what you should do. If you spend more time on what you should do, you have more chances of finding fulfilment in your goal and life.
Many people do things just because they can, but they never realise that they are losing something significant in exchange. They may achieve what they set to achieve but find out that there is no fulfilment in it. Some are working in professions that they can do, but not the ones they should be doing. You can do it, does not mean you should.
Your gifts, passion and abilities make it easier for you to do what you should, energising and empowering you to do it, equipping you to face the challenges that may come your way. It is not everything you do that gives you a sense of fulfilment, and not everything you do gives you the energy to keep going. Doing what you should put you on a different path in life. It will provide what money cannot buy.
Some people may work hard to sing; some enjoy singing. Some work hard to bake; some enjoy baking. Some people struggle to care for and treat people, while some get satisfaction by doing it. There is a difference even with the same output. It does not have the same impact on the individuals involved. It is liberating to find what you should be doing and leave what you can do.
The more you discover what you should do, the more you will realise that you have fewer options and choices. When you can choose from what you can do, you may have found what you should do, and you would have moved a step further towards fulfilment. The best of you is released when you are focused on doing what you should be doing.
