They Knew it; Do you? Part 5

Immorality Destroys

Everyone makes choices daily, and most people consider theirs the best for them, but it seems some never get to know the implications of their choice or probably what it would mean for them or how it may affect others.

I wonder if a man would carry a package next to his chest if he knew it contained an explosive that is about to detonate. How many people would be happy to jump into a yard if they knew it has burning coal all over the surface? Can someone be happy to drink water—even if it is free if he understands that it will bring shame and pain?

It seems that not everyone understands the implication of their actions, at least when they did it. Some people understand later, but at that time, more damage has occurred than they could ever realise.

The story of Rueben offers some lessons that could help. He was one of the twelve sons of Jacob—each representing a tribe that maintained the identity of their respective tribes. The Israelites are the descendants of these twelve sons.

Jacob knew something about the actions of his son Reuben and the implications on his future. He was the first son with privileges of leadership and honour, similar to the rights of an heir that is next in line to the throne, but something happened that changed his path.

He had an affair with his father’s wife that robbed him of his position and future.  Jacob knew he would no longer excel because of the incest and the reality played out in the life of Reuben. It seems the character issue continued, so did its implications—which left the tribe without significant personalities.

Jacob knew the impact of such a character on any life, which is still correct and applicable many years afterwards. You might have seen, heard or read of the fall of many people that have lost their position, influence, honour and dignity because of immorality. They include leaders, ministers, presidents, princes, directors, managers, and many others across all walks of life.

It has the same destructive effect regardless of the person. It reduces people to nothing, mutes the mouth of the eloquent, brings shame and humiliation to the elegant, and forces the popular into hiding. It has always done so and will always do—only a matter of time. The higher you go, the greater the fall and the more significant the impact.

I wonder who would be happy to step on fire when he knows it would burn his feet or which wise man would hurt his body if he knows that the wounds will not heal. You will find that those aware of the danger take time to make decisions that will help them and those around them.

One of the things that may help you is to understand the implications of your actions, not just for you but also for others.

You can seek help if you are already on the wrong path or experiencing the consequences of your actions but cannot figure out why.

You may have missed some critical reality—that could help you make informed choices, but you can still seek help from where you are today so that you can make appropriate changes that would guarantee a great future. You do not have to go ahead if you know there is pain and shame ahead of you. You can decide to stop, think and change—it is not too late.
