They Knew it; Do you? Part 4

The Purpose of Pain

One of the things many people would like to avoid is pain. No one would like inconveniences. No one would like discomfort. No one would like to be under unnecessary agony. It is true but is it always avoidable?

The pain we experience could be a result of so many things. It will not just happen, there would be a reason which could be known or unknown, but the cause of the pain could determine if we could avoid it.

It is generally true that if you know enough about the pain you are going through, you might be in a better position to know what to do about it. If it is self-caused, you are likely to ascertain the reason, as probably your fault or your error and aim to correct it next time or get help with the consequences.

Anyone that uses a sharp tool like a knife or hacksaw without caution may end up with an injury that may inflict pain. The cause of the pain is traceable—hence you can get treatment and wait for the healing process to complete. It is self-inflicted pain.

Someone else may inflict pain on another because of a wrong done or the crime committed. They may decide to hurt you because of what you have done—to revenge or to serve as a punishment. If you experience such, you may know why the pain was inflicted and trace the source. It is the consequence of your action.

There are also some pains we feel because of growth and development. For example, a child feels pain when growing new teeth, the same way some other phases of development in the body sometimes bring uncomfortable and painful experiences. If you find out, you may discover the reason for the pain and work towards an action plan to help you through the period.

Generally, knowing the reason for the pain may help react to it with understanding. It could be a problem if you do not know.

You may have an ache because of growing teeth, and you know that it will last for three days. If you know the reason, duration and probably what you can do to relieve the pain, you may have a different perspective. You may find that you are more hopeful because you know when it will end and what to expect. You are also not likely to worry about unnecessary and unrelated matters as the cause of the pain. You would probably accept any relief and endure it for the known period.

Rebekah, the wife of Isaac, lived in mediaeval Israel. She was pregnant but experienced more pain than expected—she became uncomfortable because she felt increased activity caused by tumbling and kicking in the womb. She found that she was pregnant with twins, which was not a familiar experience at the time. It was two babies butting heads in her body. The struggle continued till birth, where the second held fast to the heel of the first with his fist. The experience gave birth to two sons called Esau and Jacob.

Many women have endured the same painful process for many generations because they know the reason and have an idea of the duration. Significant work has made the process easier, which has helped many go through it gracefully. However, it has not eradicated the pain. Many still go through it because the joy of the baby delivered outweighs the pain.

Do you know the reason for your pain?

You may be missing something significant that could help you progress from where you are at the moment. The reason for your pain can help you search for an effective solution.

I hope you will find the missing knowledge that can help sharpen your perspective towards your current situation.
