The Choice to Win

This year, we witness another edition of the international multi-sport event, held in Tokyo, Japan—the 2020 summer Olympics. You may have heard some news from some of the games. It is a mixture of different types from the media, some exciting while others are disappointing.

Some participants got medals, but some did not. Some that desired to participate did not make it to the final selection. You may have been there probably as a coach or a participant, or perhaps you know some of the delegates there representing your nation. It is interesting to see how the events unfold—how the unknown becomes known or how a returning medalist gets more medals or perhaps fewer or none.

There are many lessons from the games depending on who you are and what you would like to learn. One thing that attracted me was some comments about the choices made in preparation for the event.

Can you imagine a situation before the games where everyone gets asked if they would like a medal? I doubt if anyone would choose silver or bronze if it all depends on what they want. Everyone will opt for gold—I guess you would also do the same. If it is free for the asking, no one will desire the worst, but unfortunately, they are not granted based on what people want—it is awarded based on their performance.

I discovered that there is something in common with the participants—they prepared ahead of the games and made choices accordingly to help achieve their goals. You would have heard the comments that reveal the lifestyles chosen by the participants. It may be a regular daily routine, with exercises or self-denial that made them refuse some things, even good things.

There are some of the choices that may look like punishment. Imagine waking up early in the morning daily to run and exercise for hours. It is a good time to sleep under the duvet, but they chose to do otherwise to secure a future they desire. You may have heard some people say things like; I love my sleep, I cannot play with my food, I cannot inconvenience myself, or I can do whatever I want to do. They also have freedom, but they exercised their freedom to put themselves under rigorous activities with a focus to make a difference.

It is not convenient, but they kept doing it because it will help them in times to come. They sacrifice time and energy to focus on what is necessary, not just what is good.

Some have been learning from a young age, with parents investing in regular and consistent training. They had choices—they could do whatever they wanted. They may not even be going against the law, but they chose not to do everything allowable or possible. It is not because it is evil, but because it will not lead them to their desired end.

They all chose a particular lifestyle that led to the victory they got. It was not compulsory by the law in their countries to do such activities. They made their law and decided to follow it with passion and focus. Being a winner is not about avoiding evil but also denying yourself what is good because it could interfere with your future. It is not against the law, but they chose it, and it paid off—one of those comments often repeated in the commentaries.

Some use their freedom to do what is convenient but often regret such when they fall short of their expectation. It is good to sleep; you may get satisfaction from eating as much as you want, but those that choose not to do some of those things do so for a reason.

As you may have known, those that made it to the Olympics were not amateurs, but you would notice that some fell on bikes, some were wounded, some could not finish as expected, some made others mistakes, but some made it through. It would be even worse for those that have no clue and those that have not invested the necessary lifestyle or attitude.

Life is hard work for those who know what they are doing; it could be a nightmare for those who do not and a disaster for those who do not know what to do. No matter which game you choose to watch, you are likely to conclude that it is hard work to win.

The kingdom lifestyle is also similar. It is a choice to live a life of focus and denial to guarantee a great future. They chose a coach and did the needful consistently even when it was not convenient. It is the same way for everyone that desires a precious reward—they must live a life of focus that will guarantee a glorious end. It is the route for anyone that loves to win.
