The New Year has begun, and activities are almost in full swing as everyone faces the year like a race with a determination to make the most of the opportunities it presents and achieve set goals.
Everyone probably had goals, plans and decisions, but some are still yet to make a move that will make it real with appropriate actions. Where are they? Are they still at the start line? Where are you on your journey this year? I wonder what your answer would be.
I heard a riddle to which people often give varying answers. It states that five frogs were sitting on a log, but one decided to jump into the pond. How many frogs were left? Is that easy or tricky?
If your answer is four, you are probably a mathematician only thinking of numbers, but it does not seem to test such skills. If you assume, you may think that there were none left because if one decides to do something quickly or different, it may also prompt the others to do the same. It could be a signal of danger, and the others would not want to wait to find out—they also follow suit. It is reasonable and possible, but the riddle did not provide such details to help conclude they did anything related.
The clue to the riddle seems to be in one word—decide. One of the five decided. The others would not have known the decision because it was not yet a visible action. It was like thinking: ‘this is what I am going to do’ or ‘this is what I will do next’ or ‘I have decided to jump’. In order words, it is a plan, vision, goal, resolution, choice or decision. It was still within, not done yet, so it was just a thought that had not progressed to action.
In that case, as you can imagine, nothing changes, as they would all still be there, but one of them had an idea of something to do within it. It explains the acceptable answer to the riddle, which is, five frogs will still be there.
There is such a great lesson in the riddle. Some, among many others, have done well to have plans, visions, goals, resolutions, thoughts or ideas that could bring about change. They are great ideas, noble thoughts, and brilliant decisions, but that does not make them a reality because they have not done anything to make it happen. They are still on the same spot as others. The only difference is that they have some ideas, but the others would probably have similar thoughts. The problem is that none of them is bold enough to take the first step in the right direction.
If you have an idea but decide not to run with it, you are not better than the one who cannot think of one. Many people have great ideas, but there is no corresponding action, so they remain in the same position as they were. It is not just deciding to jump but leaping that makes the difference.
It is time to do something about your decisions. It is time to act on your plans. Many people have a list of good things to do, but they never get to do them till the day is over, the month is past, and the year comes to an end. You may need to learn to jump—that is the only way your ideas can bring change to your life and affect other people.
Are you still one of the five frogs sitting on the log with great ideas? Do something positive that will draw you closer to your goal. Even if you do a little, do it consistently. It will take you from where you are and gradually to where you ought to be. If you do not want to be in the same position you were at the beginning of the year when the year ends, there is something you can do now. Jump in the right direction. Jump now!
