Evaluate Your Decisions
We make decisions—we hope they would lead us to our desired outcome. It would be great if every decision achieves that, but unfortunately in life, it is not always the case—sometimes we make wrong decisions—the unexpected or unanticipated happens—that makes the situation worse and not better. It could also be the case in times of need.
Many people will usually come to a final decision concerning any issue based on some or many considerations. The decisions we make is a reflection of how we think and assess the situation. The difference between a good or bad decision is a function of our thoughts and considerations.
Some people may believe they have made the best decision to get help but may later discover that they were wrong. They probably misjudged, assumed or yielded to a temptation that took advantage of their needs—it is the lowest and perhaps the most vulnerable position anyone could be.
It is common for some people to neglect what they know or what is true because of their desperate need or the eagerness to get help by all means possible. The attitude makes them ignore many factors and flashing warnings that could have saved them from a wrong decision. It could be challenging for the weak-willed in times of need.
A man may decide to buy a cheap car, so cheap that it is likely to be faulty or unreliable. The man may ignore the facts and go ahead with the purchase as his best decision but later discover that he has to pay more for repairs. The situation then gets worse as he has to spend more on the car to get it to work, or probably he cannot afford the cost of repairs and end up with an automobile that does not work but has gulped all the little resources he had. It is one of those situations where the cheap becomes more costly than what you thought was expensive. It could be challenging to make sound decisions in times of need, but it is crucial to evaluate them because some are not just worth it in the long run.
An entrepreneur with limited resources may use substandard goods to make his products because he cannot afford genuine parts. He may soon discover that he has not done himself or the future of his business any good. The result can only be temporary. He will likely end up in a worse position. The ability to resist that temptation is a virtue that would help build a valuable brand. Many people have attempted such fake brands or imitations—which may have attracted so many people initially, the big profits and customers began to diminish when the truth becomes revealed. The things that last may not come as quickly as we expect but usually have the characteristics of endurance and peace of mind.
It is like gathering crowds through deceit and attracting people by falsehood. It may happen, but it is usually temporary. They will leave when they discover the truth. You cannot successfully deceive all of the people all of the time. Whatever help or assistance you get through deceit will not last. The time of need could be one of the most susceptible times in the life of an individual. It implies that resisting the urge to do anything regardless of its implications is a valuable resource that can preserve the future of such individual.
It may seem that the solution is quick, but it could eventually set one back farther than where one started. A student that is struggling with his course may consider cheating as an easy way out. It could work temporarily, but he may find himself in an unpleasant situation when caught. It is usually better to make the right decision, even if it hurts now, instead of making the wrong decision that is pleasurable now but will hurt later.
If you failed in your examination, it could be what you require to expose your weaknesses which could assist in getting the right help and assistance. It could also help reveal your strengths, gifts or abilities. The analysis of the information could lead to a better decision for your future. It is not the end, take responsibility and make better decisions.
Most often than not, the experiences we try to avoid are the experiences that could help us make the right decisions in life. If you fail a subject or endeavour, it could help you understand what you have done wrong and get help to make amends. It could also help you discover yourself or explore other things that you may be good at doing.
Some of the inventions and solutions we enjoy today came from people that made the right decisions in times of need. That is the reason why their work is still benefiting many people around the world. There may be times when you need to stop because you have failed and try something else. There could also be times you need to continue and persevere till you succeed. The decision you make is key to your success.
An American inventor and businessman, Thomas Edison, had many challenges. His teacher called him ‘addled’—mentally ill—he got expelled from school. He lost his first two jobs because he was ‘non-productive’. He failed one thousand times before he successfully invented the prototype of the light bulb. He made some decisions despite his need that eventually made him known as America’s greatest inventor.
Albert Einstein, a German-born theoretical physicist, also had a challenging experience. His parents thought he was deformed and retarded, because he could not speak until he was four, nor read till seven. His teacher called him mentally slow and expelled him from school.
At twenty-three, his father died—he had to care for his mother and sister. It was tough because he was not employed, and the family was also in significant debt. He had challenging times but made decisions that eventually got him recognition as one of the greatest physicists of all time.
Henry Ford also failed several times. He could not produce a car even after using all the money from his first investors. His company suffered bankruptcy. He did not do well in politics and experienced other losses. His decisions in difficult times eventually led to what he is known for today. He founded the Ford Motor Company and played a significant role in developing the assembly line technique of mass production.
Anyone that has not failed has probably not done many things. If you make mistakes, take ownership and learn from your mistakes. It will help you improve and become a better person. It will help you do better in life.
Your decision is your responsibility, but it is worth evaluating it from time to time to ensure you have the best possible outcome. The decisions you make in times of need can help change your story. I encourage you to make the best decision that will not only yield temporary benefit but long-lasting fulfilment.
