You are in School
Empowered with facilities, resources and speciality, school is one of the most palpable places known to provide education and development opportunities.
In many countries, it is compulsory to go to school, at least to a certain level. You probably have gone through such systems and have been educated in a particular field or profession.
I wonder what the answers of a hundred students would be when asked, ‘why are you going to school?’ The answers could vary, but one or more may answer, saying that ‘I am going to school to learn.’
I, sometimes, ask students about their schoolwork and hear different responses. One answer could be as follows; ‘We did word problems in Mathematics today. We had a lesson and then some questions afterwards, to which we were to apply the knowledge gained.’ It is interesting to note that they went to school to solve problems.
There was once an upset student that did not like the idea of solving problems. He was frustrated about so many different things at different times. On this occasion, it was a word problem to solve after some lessons. The teacher read it as follows; Jude was given three pounds and fifty pence by his Dad, Jon, for his lunch money. On his way, he was running on the school field and lost seventy-five pence. How much did Jude have left?
The majority of students could relate the knowledge to the problem; a few asked related questions, while others found it straight forward. There was, however, one different reaction. One of the students was furious—thinking that he required assistance—the teacher asked; What is the matter? He responded, why did Jude run on the field? He should have walked carefully to avoid the loss. He has created a problem for us. We are now suffering for his actions. I wonder what you think. It is interesting to know that there are different reactions to the same problem in the class.
It is similar in life because it is full of problems, and we all react differently. Every class has its problems with varying degree of difficulty, but the idea is to learn to solve them. Frustration continues if we only avoid them or complain about them.
It is interesting to see that you have a lesson to learn from, then you are given related problems to solve to test your understanding. It is the opposite in life. You get the challenges before you learn the lesson that comes through the experience.
The best students in school usually spend so much time practising the problems, solving different types, and doing all the exercises. It is understandable, they are better, but they have invested more time solving probably all possible questions that may arise, so they become a master in solving them. Their attitude then becomes different. They are happy to solve the problems, unlike the student complaining about Jude. Some students want the class to end because they do not understand how to solve the problem. The excited ones are those that know what to do.
The masters are usually those that faced their challenges and solved their problems. They were once broken but eventually, become a master at mending. They once tried, though failed but found how to succeed.
What are you going through? What is the problem or challenge before you? It may be the school you require to learn to be a better person.
Many successful people became great by attempting to solve their problems. They eventually became a master, helping others with ease and getting rewarded for it.
You may have a great business idea, but you do not have money. It is similar to a word problem. There is a known and unknown, how can you solve the problem. If you spend so much time researching a solution, you would soon become a master in doing so, thus opening the door of opportunities to help others. You will get a reward for inventing a new solution.
There is something similar in the biographies or autobiographies of most people that become successful. You will observe that there would be a problem or series of challenges in their stories, to which they found solutions. It could be poverty, lack, hatred, abuse, loss, deprivation, limitations, disorder, rejection, frustration, interruption, change, or detestation. The experiences through those times, most often than not, becomes instrumental to their success. They sought a solution to the problem and became a master in helping others. They usually pioneer a new career that flourishes on the victories of their experiences.
You may find that an orphan that becomes great starts an orphanage or provide opportunities for their benefit. An individual that suffered abuse would fight for justice for others or provide education for their liberation.
If you have failed an exam and later passed, you would appreciate success better and treat others in the same position with understanding. The lesson comes after the problem.
Many people are frustrated under leaders that cannot understand what their followers are going through because they have never been there. They have never had to solve such problems. They do not know how it feels. A survey result once suggested that if your manager could competently do your work, he/she is likely to treat you well and with understanding than those that cannot do or understand what you do. Some lessons are learnt only by being in the same shoes or understanding how it feels.
Your situation may provide the education you need to make progress and improve. It may help you appreciate and understand others. It could be a pointer to a problem you could begin to solve. It may be your university to equip you for a new career. It could help you gain confidence, experience over the issues and circumstances.
Many organisations, nations and individuals spend so much on learning. Your need may have given you that opportunity with you knowing. If you take advantage of the opportunity, you could soon become a master and helping others find the way. Cheer up! You are already in school.
To be continued next week, don’t miss it.
