Finding Help in times of need -Part 15

Connect with people seeking similar goals.

Do you require help? You are not alone. There are many others in the same boat. You may get help quicker by connecting to those that have similar needs. There are so many problems in life and so also are solutions. You may be able to take advantage of current information from people that are also going through the same challenges.

A student writing a college examination may learn many things from those preparing for the same. It could be various information, including process, techniques, venues, registration, and correspondence, to mention a few. The journey could be smoother if the student has access to a group of people undergoing the same process.

I heard the story of a university student that got admission to start a new course. She was new to the environment and the process. It was not like her secondary school, where students in a class stayed together for most of their subjects. What did she do? She found that many people were going towards the library, so she followed and stayed there to read, day after day and went back home afterwards. It seems, to her, like what every student does. One day, one of the workers noticed she is always in the library and decided to ask. Are you a new student? She answered in the affirmative. She then got some education on the process and where she needs to go.

The student probably was given information but probably ignored it or did not understand. It is also possible that she turned up late and missed important details. Many things could have been the cause, but if she could connect to some other new students in the department, it could have helped her find her footing easily, as they all have the same goal and would go through the same process. She could have confirmed that she was in the right place by checking those surrounding her.

A young man registered to sit for a series of examinations. He prepared alone and attended the venue to sit for each on the specified day. He relied on a calendar for the date, but unfortunately, it was incorrect. He did not turn up as the calendar mixed up the date and suggested the paper was for the next day. He failed. It was a painful experience, but if he was in touch with others doing the same thing, regular updates could have helped him. Someone in the group may probably also notice his absence and get in touch. The energy that drives a common goal could be helpful.

It is also applicable in other areas of life. If you are looking for a job, connecting with groups of people seeking the same could help you. You would be connecting to a pool of resources that aims to achieve a specific goal. You could gain speed because some other people have information that you do not have, and your input could benefit others.

An applicant may get a call for a job interview. He could share with others some tips on how he was selected. Another may be selected or rejected after an interview and could provide some vital information to others. Some could have a list of recruiting organisations or relevant opportunities. The list is endless. The more people that have the same goal, the more help they could be to one another. If you are always with people with different goals, you are likely to have more distractions. It will not contribute positively to achieving your goal.

There are so many ways to achieve this, including meetings, forums, groups, professional bodies, associations, one to one visits and so on. It depends on what is appropriate for you at every phase of life. I know of some groups for young mothers that meet together to share experiences and challenges they face with keeping the home or raising a specific age group of children. Mothers with babies may benefit from ideas from other mothers with children of similar ages. Some may have toddlers, connecting to parents having similar challenges could help. They could also share new and current opportunities that are available, which are relevant to their goal. It could be child care, life-work balance, growth, education, and many others applicable to that phase of their lives.

Some people could be seeking scholarships, apprenticeship placement, university places, and so on. You are not the only one. They are many others that could be in the same position. You could benefit from relating with them.

You may be part of a group or forum, for instance. A member decides to decline a job offer or probably got a better offer from another organisation. He could be in a position to suggest a colleague. The information could be helpful to someone else that needs the job. The job may be open to the next candidate that also applied for it. If more people are required, he is likely to inform people he knows and not people he does not know. The person could be you.

You may need some legal assistance. Many people do. You can find forums that address the challenges or issues that require justice.  If related, the information will benefit more people with the same problem, thus helping more people.

You may ask, but if no such group is available near me or non-existent, what do I do? You can connect with people from anywhere around the world to get information, advice and support. Location should not be a barrier. There are also many resources documented by various forums that could benefit people that are having similar problems. It may not be live or active, but it could meet your needs. If none exist, you may start one. You may be the hope of many seeking help in that area. You will be surprised at the attraction of people that have such needs to your innovation. If it is happening to you, it is proof that many more people are going through the same or had or will soon do so. Seeking help as a group gives more strength to achieve the goal and lightens the burden. It is shared by many and not one person.

There are benefits to enjoy from other professionals by joining the relevant association or professional body. Carpenters can help one another in their trade. The same goes for electricians, traders, engineers, doctors, politicians etc. You benefit from a pool of resources to which everyone contributes. You do not have to do all the work, do your bit, and everyone enjoys the benefit.

You could benefit from updates, ideas, challenges, new policies, changes that affect your area of interest. You also have access to connections that could help you. The group members may have access to people or resources that could be the help you need. What you need may be available to someone else but not useful to them. They will be willing to give it to you if they know you.

It is vital to check that you are joining a trusted and reliable company. Find what works for you and be a part of the pool of resources to provide and or receive help in your chosen area of interest.

To be continued next week, don’t miss it.
