If you want to know, learn from those that teach.
If you want to do, learn from those that practise.
There are so many people in the world to learn from, but different people impart different skills. I found this to be true. Some give you enough to be informed, while some others go further to empower you to be able to reproduce the same action. It all depends on what you want.
A young graduate at the outset of his career followed so many people that acquired knowledge and certifications in Information Technology. The aim was to increase the prospects of getting a lucrative job and be easily singled out of the crowd. It has become a popular trend. Many people display their certifications everywhere possible, and some as a suffix after their name. The more you have, it seemed, the more acceptable you are. So there has been continuous chase for certifications. He attempted so many of them, especially the popular ones. He discovered that although he was learning more and knew more, it was difficult to practise or proof the knowledge because he did not have the hands-on experience or the environment to practise.
There are so many frustrated graduates around the world today. They have good certificates to proof knowledge but cannot function in their field of choice. They desire gainful employment, but the employers need people that can do the work and not those that only gained some knowledge. I found that most employers prefer an Engineer that can fix the problem to one that only has a certificate. They will hire an Architect that can do the job, instead of one that is only certified and cannot deliver the expected results.
Imagine a student that wants to learn how to bake bread. He/she could receive instruction from anyone that has such information. The information could be correct, but there are so many things that will still be required if he/she desires to put the knowledge to practise. Another student that shadows a baker in real life situation would probably have more practical information than the first student. He would have more confidence in the process and see how the process works and can see the expected outcome. If the latter continues to bake under the supervision of the baker, he would be able to master the actual process and produce the same result, gaining skill and expertise through the opportunity to follow the actions of the baker. It soon becomes a skill. It is mastered with time, and can produce the same result anywhere. The former, however, may struggle in a real-life scenario because it would be a new experience to the student. What is the difference between the two? One learnt from someone that knows the other from someone that practises. So many people in life desire to do, but learn from those that teach. They are missing the hand-on skills to put the knowledge to practise. To know, learn from teachers. To practise, learn from practitioners.
I once attended a training session which was organised by a company, to be able to deploy one of their products in our environment. The Trainer was exploring the configuration of the product, and its benefit on well-designed and informative PowerPoint slides. I felt confident and thought I had enough information to do it myself. I got back to implement what I have learnt, and I discovered that I could not complete the configuration. I understood all he said, but it was not sufficient for me to do the same. I got stuck and could not go ahead. I had to engage the help of a colleague with practical knowledge that guided me through the actual process and solved the problems encountered in the process. That is what happens when we learn from those that give information alone, and expect to become those that produce or set-up a product. There are some problems you will encounter when you decide to do or practise that only someone that has gone through it before can help you resolve.
You might have attended training sessions, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and so many other information-gathering sessions and found that it seems good but not that easy to put to practise. You may need to learn more from those that practise and not just those that teach.
You need to decide what you want and understand how to get it. If you only need the information, there are so many information givers. If you desire to produce results with what you know; you may need to learn under those that practise; people that do it so well. You will see the whole process and be able to learn how to do the same and become a doer and not just an accumulator of information.
Have you struggled to put into practise some of the information you have gathered over the years? It may be time to look for those that practise and be willing to learn from them. If you cannot make it work, it implies that you may not know enough to make it work. Search for doers, so you can learn and become one of them.
To be continued next week, don’t miss it.
I hope you have found this post valuable, please leave a comment below and share with others. Send in your questions or contributions as well if you have any, I will be glad to hear from you.
