Ability
Can you get the job done?
A builder got foam cut in the size of a brick. He needs a brick for his building, but would he consider using foam instead?
The foam is the same size, it looks good and could fit the same space, but there is a problem because it cannot hold the same weight as a brick. So it does not matter what the name may be; it cannot do the job.
A wise builder will not sacrifice ability over name or similarity because it will ruin the work and end in shame. If you need a tap, you cannot possibly use a remote control because it cannot get the job done.
“You will only be to people what you have proven ability to solve.”
You increase in value as you help meet the needs of other people, but you can only achieve that goal when you have gained the ability to do something that could meet their needs.
You may be very quiet and would not hurt a fly, which is good, but that would not meet the needs of people. The people around you have needs, and they need people that can solve them. The question is, do you have the skills required to help? You are quiet, but can you do what they need? The skills you have eventually make room for you to aid you in helping other people.
You may empathise with someone having health issues, but they need a medical practitioner to solve the problem. For example, an individual will seek a plumber when he has issues with water flow in his house but will go past a quiet or gentle person because he cannot solve the problem.
The bricks in a building are there for a reason, but other materials like foam get neglected because they cannot do the same job. It is simply because of the ability of each material and how they could meet the need at hand.
“Who you are to people becomes significant because of what you can or have done.”
A pilot may be short, tall, slim, or chubby. However, something matters more—his ability to fly the plane. The passengers and crew will ignore his height; the company will not worry about the shape of his face—he can occupy that position with dignity because of his ability.
What can you do? What problem can you solve? You can choose to develop and work on yourself to enhance your skills so that they can serve your generation. For example, when people have car problems, they look for a mechanic. They seek a solicitor if legal issues arise. They approach an optician when they have eye issues—the reason is simple, they only look for people with proven ability to do the job.
You will only be to people what you have proven ability to solve. Who you are to people becomes significant because of what you can or have done.
If you wait for people to respect you for doing nothing, you might have a long wait ahead without results, but you can cut that short by empowering yourself—developing and enhancing your skills. You can, so equip yourself to occupy the position you deserve.
