Building Blocks for a Quality Life -Part 7

Function

Many things do not seem to have direct relevance to what we want to do or achieve in life but are they necessary for us to continue to live well, or do they contribute to the big goal?

Eating well, for instance, may not necessarily help you pass your examination, but it contributes to the continuous working of your systems, including your brain. If you decide not to eat for a period, say three months, your system will be affected, and your entire body will suffer the effects of starvation. It could affect your ability to study and consequently your performance at the examination—assuming you are still alive to sit it.

More often than not, some people neglect many things because they do not see how it relates to the total picture. They see it as trivial because it is not the big dream they are chasing.

“You can choose not to destroy the systems that contribute to your future.”

Every block in a building has a function—it is not just there—it is doing something there. Your life has stages that constitute different things at different times necessary to keep you living. It may not be what you would be known for, but it is what you need to do—while you are at that stage, do your part.

You may not be famous for cooking or eating, but you need food to keep alive. You may not become a professional dentist, but you need to clean your teeth to avoid problems that can affect your health in the long run. You may not want to be well-known for visiting the bathroom, but you must create time out of your busy schedule to attend. If you continually ignore the call as unnecessary, you will be in trouble as you would make a mess of yourself—it does not matter which great dream you are pursuing.

It is necessary because it is part of a process that helps whatever you decide to do. It has its place that should be recognised and accepted. It is part of the journey, so you must honour and fulfil your commitment because it will help your big goal.

“Every step of the way contributes to your overall success.”

It is crucial to play your role wherever you are, at every phase of life, regardless of what you aim to do in the future. You can add value everywhere you find yourself on your way to the top—you can choose not to destroy the systems that contribute to your future.

If you decide to be there, then perform your role. If it is a path on your way to your destination, do your part. If life circumstances have brought you there, do what you can, and do it well. It is not only the end that matters; it is not only the big things or the destination, but every step of the way contributes to your overall success.

A child wants to be a doctor, but the child needs to grow, live with people, eat, drink, and attend various schools to learn different subjects and experiences that may not be directly relevant to his desired profession but contributes to the success of the same. A doctor will write, communicate, calculate, relate, plan, decide on matters, and handle challenging circumstances, among other things. The different stages of life can add value that contributes to a wholesome individual.

“What you neglect today may contribute to your downfall tomorrow.”

If you decide to take a part-time job, do your part well, even if it is temporary. It may be the link to your future or provide you with experiences and skills that will distinguish you in future.

Do your duty as a child growing up under the tutelage of your parents, respect those that look after you, be obedient and help out in every way you can.

You are part of a family, team, community or nation; do all you can to contribute to the success of those that support you and do so to the best of your ability. Do your best to make significant contributions wherever you find yourself as you journey to your destination.

If you are married, be committed to your vows as a husband or wife and do your part. It is part of the big picture. Some people have achieved great successes only to watch them shatter in a twinkle of an eye because of mismanaged or neglected problems in the home.

What you neglect today may contribute to your downfall tomorrow. Choose to do your part as you journey in life—it all counts to the making of a great future.
