Building Blocks for a Quality Life -Part 18

Order III

Have you ever experienced the consequence of disorderliness?

The degree of ease we enjoy is often a product of our hard work creating orderliness. You may have found this to be true.

A passenger once arrived at the airport trying to check in for a flight he had booked for himself. The Airline representative requested his passport and other documents, and then the drama began. He searched everywhere possible for it while at the front of a queue. One may ask different questions to ascertain what has gone wrong, but in most cases, putting things in a designated place could make a better experience. He would have prior knowledge of what is required and could ensure that the necessary documents are at easy reach and in a designated place that he could easily remember. He can take it and return it to the same place after each use to ensure it is always there.

“The degree of ease we enjoy is often a product of our hard work creating orderliness.”

I was on-board a plane with a gentleman. He sat beside me and looked confused after searching his pockets and bags for something, which I later discovered was his passport. I asked some questions, including the following; did you take it back at check-in? Did you give it to anyone else? Where did you keep it? I discovered he did not have a set place to keep it, so it went to any available space. He kept searching, and by this time, he started thinking of the consequence of losing a passport and how it would affect his already planned holiday. The plane was about to depart, and he was still trying to figure out what to do. Fear, panic, and anxiety were already tormenting him. Eventually, he found it after a handful of people helped him, and there was relief. He did not lose the passport but needed to be more organised to make it easy for him.

The same is true for many people. The pain, fear, anxiety, and panic that torments them result from a lack of proper organisation.

Many people have discovered the wisdom of arranging books, documents, food, clothing, or tasks to make things easy and seamless. If you always keep one item in the same place, it makes it easy for you to find it. The discipline required is to ensure you return it to the same place whenever you take it away. If you refuse to do that for any reason, you will likely suffer the pain that comes with disorderliness.

Order is why some individuals can dress up on time without missing out on anything. It is the secret of those that can produce any document you need in the shortest possible time. It can explain why some people always know where to find what they need. It is the secret behind the genius of those who can see a letter’s importance, content, purpose, or relevance by looking at the packaging. It is the brain behind delivering different goods to different people at various locations and times. Furthermore, it explains the continuous availability of services from multiple people at various times and places.

“You can make your life effective by becoming organised.”

You can make your life effective by implementing and becoming organised. No one size fits all. You can always do something that works for you and maintain the discipline to follow through. It could be as simple as arranging books in a particular order on shelves or arranging documents in order of importance or date. Colour coding is another excellent idea to differentiate one item from another easily. You can assign time slots for each task, populate each day in a diary with a list of things to do, or assign tasks to different people at different times. Designating a location for each item may help productivity, saving time and resources. It can be simple, but as long as it works for you and makes you efficient, it may be a good idea.

You can use various tools, including technology, to achieve the same purpose. For example, you can keep digital copies of documents in a folder structure and make them accessible locally or from anywhere over the internet, or use a digital to-do list, diaries, booking systems, and collaboration software to improve efficiency.

You can choose to implement orderliness in many areas of your life where you may be seeing signs of chaos. However, it would be best if you could be committed to the required discipline to make it work. You will enjoy ease, efficiency, and peace of mind when you do. Now is the time to go for it.
